Lentils are an important source for protiens. If you make different lentils every day then they will seem much more delicious. This masoor dal is prepared using common spice powders and paste, not to forget tasty onions and tomatoes,which give it a lip smacking flavour and aroma.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup whole masoor dal
  • 2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1- inch ginger
  • 2 green chilli
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 medium tomato
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 2 tablespoon ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 red chili

Method:

  • Clean whole masoor dal,wash and then soak for 2 hours.
  • Remove water from dal and wash again.
  • Put the masoor dal in a cooker, add 2 cups water,1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder.
  • Close the lid and place the dal on the gas to cook.
  • After 1 whistle goes off lower the flame and cook dal for another 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Turn off the gas until all of the pressure escapes from the cooker let us prepare the spices.
  • Wash then cut tomatoes in 4 to 5 pieces, break the stems off the green chillies and wash them.
  • Peel and wash ginger.Put the tomatoes, green chillies and ginger in a mixer to make a fine paste.
  • Heat ghee in a frying pan, put asafoetida and cumin seeds.
  • When cumin seeds crackle add chopped onion and fry until light brown in colour.
  • Add turmeric powder, coriander powder and red chilli powder and little salt.
  • Now put the tomato paste and fry the spices till ghee starts to float over them.
  • Open the cooker and put the spices in the dal.
  • Mix well, add water according to how thick or thin you want the texture of the dal.
  • Add garam masala in dal. Whole masoor dal is ready to serve.
